As part of my university course this year, one of the projects we had to do was to create a mock proposal that could be pitched to a company that we admire. I choose the clothing brand Lucy and Yak and here is the pitch.
"My proposal to Lucy and Yak would be, a capsule collection of water themed dungarees that have been made from fabric that has been created from using plastic found in the ocean or washed up on beaches. I think this is a good idea for a collection as it is estimated that there is currently 5.25 trillion micro pieces of plastic in the ocean today which weighs up to 269,000 tones, additionally it is estimated that a further 8 million pieces of plastic enters the ocean everyday. As a result I think this idea works well for a company like Lucy and Yak as it alines with their commitment to create an environmentally sustainable brand. It also shares similarities with a collection the brand has done in the past which was made using plastic found in landfills, so they are clearly aware of the issue of excessive plastic waste. The other benefit of using plastic found in the ocean is that the material becomes regenerative and therefore the material has the ability to be broken down and reused to make a new products once the original cloths are know longer desirable, which takes away the need to continuously make new fabric from new raw materials. However, using plastic found in the ocean is not a new idea and there are companies out there that use ocean plastic exclusively to create their product range such as MYoMY and Oilily. For the patterns within the collection I was inspired by the ripples and shadows created by moving water. I have kept the colour palette very simple and stuck with different shades of blue. I initially choose to focus on a water theme for the patterns, because it seemed the obvious path to take considering what the fabric is made from, and also water creates a very abstract pattern, which wouldn't be out of place in any other Lucy and Yak collection, because although Lucy and yak are known primarily for the bright colours they use, they have also created many collections that feature extremely abstract patterns which always seem to sell out really quickly demonstrating that there would be a market for this capsule collection."
